How is PABA Used in Sunscreen?
PABA (Para- Amino benzoic acid) is used in many formulations as its medicinal elements support it further. PABA is an organic compound. Sunscreen is the one main use of this white crystalline substance.
We all love to have beautiful skin even if we turn 60 and above. Is it that easy to have a fresh skin even at that age? Well, it is possible with the help of sunscreen creams. The major constituent of sunscreen cream has been PABA. It was first introduced in the year 1970 in the United States of America and since then the response for PABA is huge. Yes PABA has been widely used as a very good sunscreen protector. Oxybenzone present in PABA helps in the process. It gives the maximum protection possible with the UV filter formulation in it. It has also been proved that PABA protects our skin from skin cancer. UVB and UVA radiations are the main things which contribute in damaging the skin. PABA when used in a sunscreen cream absorbs UVB and UVA radiations completely.
Question that strikes off in all our minds is: Why PABA is used? It is because when a PABA sunscreen cream is applied it sticks tightly on the cells present in the epidermis. It is very hard for you to remove it for a while even if you wash or rub it off with water or with a piece of cloth. It attaches itself strongly on the skin and gives the maximum protection possible. Recent release from British Medical Journal has stated that sunscreen lotions using Oxybenzone have a higher risk of developing a skin cancer for the users. Well this is not 100% correct because the main use of Oxybenzone is to “filter” the UV rays which fall on the surface on the skin. The point to be noted here is that UV rays are responsible for skin cancer and Oxybenzone acts as a protector. The question here is how come Oxybenzone becomes a reason for the skin cancer? The UV rays are converted into light to heat and Oxybenzone absorbs it. There is a common notion among people that PABA sunscreen causes a DNA effect if it is continuously used for a period of time. This is not at all right as there is no evidence to prove this DNA effect.
There are many sunscreen products available without PABA but there is nothing that can replace PABA.
