Benefits of Omega 6 for ADHD
Because essential fatty acids of Omega 3 and Omega 6 are very important in development and maturation of the nervous system in children it is very easy to understand why absence or inadequate amount of these acids may lead to the occurrence or incidence of serious illness in these small patients.
One of the most serious and common mental illnesses in children is attention deficit (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD) in which the majority of symptoms appear before 7 years of age. Among the symptoms we have: the child's inability to maintain attention and the fact that he is easily disturbed by the surrounding stimuli. Hyperactivity that may lead to an inadequate behavior, especially in community and violence (affecting the brain areas of inhibition), are determining the child to engage in various activities without assessing the severity of risks involved. Especially if not properly treated, these symptoms can be maintained up to adult age.
Current researches have shown that lack of essential fatty acids Omega 3 and 6 in pregnancy may cause the fetus in the third trimester of pregnancy to develop deficiencies that lead to subsequent and inadequate functioning of the brain like the occurrence of mental illness. The best example stands in ADHD. To avoid this risk, experts recommend that pregnant women should consume salmon, sardines, herring or tuna.
Various studies in recent years have stressed the common symptoms in ADHD and lacks of essential fatty acids in children with ADHD symptoms and with large lower level arahidonic acid in blood plasma. Also the ratio of Omega 3 and Omega 6 in children suffering from ADHD is much smaller than in healthy children. We do not know why this happens but it is sure that Omega 6 aids ADHD sufferers.
Children with ADHD are to consume fish several times a week. If children do not want to take them parents must find other foods rich in essential fatty acids such as milk and bread with added such acids. Also, under the strict supervision of the physician, the child will get the proper amount of fatty acids in his diet, by taking dietary supplements appropriate for his age.
Recent scientific research indicates that only a small percentage of children respond to foods without addictives. However this does not have to stop parents from experimentation in nutrition changes.
