Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are very important as an energy source for the human body. They are very easy to transform into glucose, which is the sugar form that is transported and then used by our body. Fats and proteins can also be used as energy sources but carbohydrates are a lot better when thinking about what our body should use. The problem is that we can not hold a diet that is too rich in carbohydrates. This would only disturb the blood sugar level balance. As an immediate result we would be faced with mood and energy fluctuations that can make us tired and irritated. Our diet needs to stay balanced and we must take in carbohydrates, protein, fibers and fat in adequate quantities.

There are two main types of carbohydrates: simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates. Complex carbs are usually called starchy foods or starch. Naturally you will find them in various foods and they are also available in some processed foods as refined carbohydrates. Good sources of complex carbohydrates are beans, bananas, barley, chickpeas, brown rice, nuts, oats, lentils, potatoes, root vegetables, yams, parsnips, sweet corn, wholemeal breads, wholemeal pasta and wholemeal cereals. Simple carbohydrates are mostly found in vegetables and fruits although they are also added in refined products as well. Remember that too much simple carbohydrates can end up causing tooth decay.

All carbohydrates will form glucose as soon as they are digested. This substance is then transported through our blood system and end up in various cells where it will be turned into energy. Insulin is responsible for controlling glucose uptake by the human cells. If we are faced with excess glucose it will be turned into glycogen so that it can be stored in our live or fat all around our body. If the body needs higher amounts of energy then the pancreas will secrete glucagon. It is a hormone that will transform glycogen into glucose. To sum up everything, the glucose metabolism of our body is basically a cycle of glucagons, insulin and glucose reactions. The main difference between simple and complex carbohydrates is that the energy release offered by complex carbohydrates is slower. They are also very good to promote appetite control and good health on a long term basis.

Around half of all energy needs of our body must come from carbohydrates. The problem is that a lot of people think that carbohydrates will make you fat. The truth is that too many carbohydrates will eventually lead to weight gains. On the other hand, if you maintain a diet that is too low in carbs you will be faced with a lot of problems. Do not mistake in believing that a diet that is low in carbs and high in protein will do wonders in weight loss.

Always remember that it is very important what types of carbohydrates you take in. This is because there are both good and bad carbs. Maintaining a diet that is very rich in good sources of carbohydrates is very important for maintaining an overall good energy level. A lot of foods that are high in sugar are also very high in fat. Examples can be given in sandwiches, roast potatoes and chips. Alternatively, instead of consuming these you can always take in foods that are both high in good carbs and fibers. The best examples can be given in wholegrain bread and pasta. The fact that they also contain fibers will also keep appetite in control.

Carbohydrates are crucial for the human body but it is very important that we know how to properly manage carb intake. This will give us energy and will bring in a lot of positive benefits.
