Inositol is actually cyclohexane-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexol and it is a chemical compound that exists in one of 9 possible stereoisomers. The most common and important one can be considered myo-inositol. Myo-inositol is important in the structural basis of some secondary messengers that are found in eukaryotic cells. This includes PI (phosphatidylinositol), inositol phosphates and PIP lipds (phosphatidylinositol). We can find myo-inositol in a variety of foods including, fruit, beans, some cereals, nuts, oranges and cantaloupe melons. The human body is capable of synthesizing Inositol on its own and that is why we do not see it officially classified as a vitamin, although it can also be considered one.

A lot of people have classified Myo-inositol as a member of the B complex vitamin family. It is sometimes labeled as B8. This was a few years back but now the declassification appeared as recent research showed that our body is capable of synthesizing it. On the other hand, it is not similar with the case of choline and niacin as they too can be created inside our bodies but not in enough quantities. Myo-inositol can be synthesized in needed quantities.

Although few people know this, Inositol is important for the human body in many processes. It is used in gene expression, insulin signal transduction, nerve guidance, cytoskeleton assembly, the control of Intracellular calcium concentration, the maintenance of cell membrane, the modulation of serotonin activity and the breakdown of some fats combine with lowering blood cholesterol.

Recent research has highlighted that Inositol is also good for our hair as it strengthens its cells. This allows hair to maintain moisture, which is highly important. Also, inositol is widely used as a very good cutting agent. Unfortunately this only happens with illegal drugs like heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine. On the other hand, the importance of inositol, especially myo-inositol for the human body should not be taken lightly. In order to avoid any possible problem your diet has to include foods that contain inositol. This means that your nutrition plan has to include nuts, beans, fruits and grains. Only in rare cases we will notice a deficiency of this substance in our body.
