Gout Treatment

Gout treatment includes the attempts to prevent acute gout attack, relieve pain and inflammation, prevent future attack, as well as to prevent complication. The treatment of gout usually includes some medications which include: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), colchicine, corticosteroids, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), allopurinol, colBenemid, probenecid, and sulfinpyrazone.

1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which are mainly used to treat acute gout until patients do not get pain and inflammation anymore for at least 2 days. The drugs are usually given to gout patients at maximum dosage soon after there are symptoms of gout. The high dosage will be reduced in line with the symptoms’. The drugs are good to reduce gout pain, swelling and redness. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs actually contain a large group of drugs, including the anti inflammatory, pain killer, and fever reducing properties. There are three types of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: salicylates, traditional NSAIDs, and the COX-2 selective inhibitors. The drugs are available in many generic names and brands.

2. Colchicine, which is used to treat acute gout, prevent flare-ups and prevent future attacks by reducing inflammation. Patients can take colchicine in small amount during a steady long period of time, or they can also take it intensively during the hours or days of attack. It is good to reduce gout pain, swelling, redness and other symptoms of gout.

3. Cortocosteroids or steroids, which are used for patients with acute gout but can not take Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and colchicine. It is good to reduce gout pain, swelling and redness. Cortocosteroids include the ingredients of Betamethasone, Budesonide, Cortisone, Dexamethasone, Hydrocortisone, Methylprednisolone, Prednisolone, Prednisone and Triamcinolone.

4. Allopurinol, which works in the system that produces uric acid and prevents gout attack.

5. Probenecid, which works on the kidneys by cleaning uric acid and prevents gout attack.

6. ColBenemid, which contains Probenecid and Colchicine together.

7. Sulfinpyrazone, which lowers the level of uric acid and prevents gout attack.

The treatments of gout are divided into some phases:

1. Initial treatment, which is done to relieve gout symptoms and causes. This includes actions to reduce gout pain, swelling, and redness.

2. Treatment to prevent future gout attacks, which includes taking prescription to reduce the level of uric acid, following gout diet, limiting alcohol consumption and doing regular exercise.

3. Ongoing treatment, which includes following the healthy lifestyle to prevent gout recurring for a long term, conducting regular check-ups with your doctor and doing further treatment if the gout get worse.
