How Genetically Modified Food Affects Our Health
Nowadays, there is probably no other nutritional subject more debated and more confusing for consumers than the one regarding how genetically modified food affects our health. Some regard them as poison and think they are highly dangerous, while others consider them to be the best solution in case of world hunger.
Are they a giant leap for humanity or a health trap? No one can give an exact answer, but most people tend to choose the latter alternative. The only thing that is certain is that this polemic caused a massive increase in the world’s genetically modified food production and the choice is left in the hands of the consumer witch has to pay lots of attention to labels if he wants to buy exactly what he is looking for.
There are plenty of contradictory studies that claim that these genetically modified aliments are enhanced, that they are increasing resistance to certain predators, reducing allergies, increasing productivity and others that claim that the population near a field of genetically modified crop is affected and can manifest fever, allergies and respiratory problems.
On humans, nothing is scientifically proven, but some animals that were constantly feed with genetically modified food presented certain discontinuities and modifications at immune and cerebral levels. Some even claim that there is no way they can bring benefits. They say it’s absurd to believe that humans can create something superior to nature; things that can seem benefic from a certain point of view will prove to bring more negative effects than expected.
So many times we ask ourselves if these genetically altered aliments can cause allergic reactions, but it is hard to identify theoretically this matter. How genetically modified food affects or does dot affect our bodies, it’s still a future mystery. When we consume a genetically altered aliment, the DNA proteins, even if they come from animals or vegetables, can react the same way in our digestive tube. If they affect or not our immune system can be guessed by the way they act in out stomach, because the digestive tube has a strong individual immune system (since it is the first to make contact with the altered proteins, which are the direct product of the modified DNA).
The thing that we must remember is that this modification process is not new, it has been around for a few centuries and the innovative modern technique of genetic modification has been developed to improve the quality of aliments and to remove the harmful characteristics.
