High Fiber Foods

When thinking about high fiber foods we must first understand what we are talking about. Different foods contain different quantities of fibers. Contrary to what you might have heard, even foods that are not labeled as containing fibers by nutritionists can still include some fibers. Generally speaking, high fiber foods are foods that will give you a minimum of 5 grams of fiber for every single serving. Fibers are required by our body in order to prevent a lot of problems. This includes constipation, some cancer types and heart diseases. Fibers also lower bad cholesterol levels and also aid in weight management.

When thinking about the high fiber foods that we have to put into our diets we basically have 4 categories that we have to analyze: fruits, vegetables, nuts and grain products. For a lot of years we have considered vegetables to be the best source of fiber possible. The best vegetables that are considered high fiber foods at the moment are spinach, broccoli, green peas, swiss chard, dried peas, lima beans, chick peas, black-eyed beans and lentils. As you can see there is quite some diversity offered. This basically means that you must not always eat the same vegetables daily. This was the biggest problem with high fiber food regimes that were based on vegetables in the past. Then we also have fruit. Great sources of fibers come in dried fruits like dates, raisins, prunes and apricots. You should also consider berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries), apple (leave the skin on), mango, kiwi, pears and oranges. Fruits are always easier to eat than vegetables. Remember the fact that few kids like vegetables. On the other hand they do enjoy fruits, especially some of the ones that were mentioned. You can alternatively skip some vegetables and use fruits as high fiber foods that are put in the diet.

Grain products are also high fiber foods. The problem is that they are usually neglected as we mainly think about fruits and vegetables as great sources of fiber. You should know that whole grain breads, bagels, muffins, buns, All Bran, corn bran, bran flakes and even cooked cereals are great when dealing with a need to take in more fiber. Just as an example, a serving of whole wheat pasta that is combined with vegetables and one of the fruits mentioned above should give you the minimum fiber needed in one day by an adult. Even popcorn can be a great source of fibers. 1 cup will give you a good amount of this highly important nutrient. There is also a bad concept that is popular, which states that seeds and nuts are not good for you. You should be aware of the fact that almonds, soynuts and flaxseeds are among the best high fiber foods you can eat. Including them in your diet once in a while will give you enough fibers while also diversifying what you are currently eating (your daily nutrition plan).

The key aspect when talking about high fiber foods is the fact that we do need diversity. Unfortunately this is not easy to reach and sometimes we can get stuck. There are many foods that you can consume but not all of them are accessible where you live. In extreme cases we might even be faced with serious lacks of fibers in one’s diet. This usually happens when a person does not eat right or simply completely neglects fibers from the nutrition plan. This can be quite dangerous and will bring in a lot of bad side effects on the long run. The good news is that even in this case we can handle the problem. In the event that you do not have enough high fiber foods in your diet you should always consider fiber supplements.
