Fiber Supplements

Whenever you think about the fiber supplements that you are going to buy, there are some things that you need to think about. Always remember that every single increase in fiber doses should be taken in small quantities at first. Combine them with a lot of water every single time. Take it slowly to reach that recommended dose on the label as failure to do this can lead to some problems. Another thing you have to consider is that not all fiber supplements are the same. If you have problems with the first one you consider (IBS symptoms or gas) then you should take a look at another one. At the end of the entire process you should make sure that you take in daily (through diet and fiber supplements) around 25 to 30 grams of fiber.

The best fiber supplements brands on the market will use different fiber types. Most of them rely on psyllium, which is a plant soluble fiber that can be found in Konsyl and Metamucil. This type of fiber is popular because it works great in relieving constipation and even in dealing with some IBS symptoms. Unfortunately there are some people that simply have problems and they do have to use a type of fiber that is not as harsh on the stomach. Different brands might use methylcellulose (a fiber that is located in Citrucel). There is also the alternative of using guar gum, calcium polycarbophil or Benefiber.

The problem is that we can not really recommend the fiber supplements that will work best in your case. Unfortunately the only way you can handle this situation is to try a product. If it creates problems then you will have to switch to another one. Also, all fiber supplements come with soluble fiber. Different studies have proved that soluble fiber is more useful in dealing with IBS symptoms as it transforms in a gel when meeting water. This will ease food pass easier through your system. On the other hand, this does not mean that you should avoid insoluble fiber. It is still very important and should not be taken out of a regular nutrition plan. The good news is that this type of dietary fiber is available in a lot of foods you are already eating. Always read the label for all fiber supplements you are considering. Some will have more fiber included than others.
