Fiber Supplement or Food

One of the most important questions you need to ask yourself before buying any fiber supplement on the market is whether or not you really need it? In theory it is very easy to take in 25 to 30 grams of fiber from what you eat (this being the RDA that you should follow). The most important goal of a fiber supplement is helping you deal with constipation. The good news is that it does work from this point of view. The bad news is that you should not really rely on fiber supplements alone. Special care needs to be reality when dealing with chronic constipation. In this case you might need to go through a series of tests as a diet high in fiber might not help you. On the other hand, it this is not your case we are dealing with a better situation that might be handled well if a good fiber supplement.

The problem is that there are a lot more foods that contain fiber than you might believe. Until a few years ago we thought that only fruits and vegetables contain it. The truth is that it is very hard to take in 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily just from vegetables, fruits or both. This is exactly why choosing the aid of a fiber supplement might be required at times. On the other hand, you should be aware of the fact that there are also foods that do contain more fiber than you might have thought. The best example stands in cereals that are high in fiber content. You can eat them as breakfast and each serving should contain around 5 grams of fiber. Then, by switching the regular bread you eat with whole wheat bread you will also gain around 2 grams for each slice you eat. On the other hand, all these extras can be gained from a good fiber supplement.

It is always best that most of the fiber you take in daily comes from food. This is because you will not only get fibers but also other valuable nutrients like minerals and vitamins. A fiber supplement will mainly contain just fiber. By maintaining a good and well balanced diet you will surely get the fiber you require daily. On the other hand, it is hard for some people to maintain that proper nutrition plan. In this case a fiber supplement might be exactly what you require, especially if you are constantly dealing with constipation.
