Saturated Fats
Saturated fats are basically fats that include carbon atoms that are saturated by hydrogen atoms. Although the chemical compound is not something that is interesting for us at the moment, the impact it can have on our body is. According to various studies that have been performed in the past, if you eat saturated fats you will end up with cholesterol reaching higher levels in the blood. Unfortunately when we have high blood cholesterol levels we are also at a higher risk of ending up with strokes and heart disease. To make everything even worse, most of the foods that have high concentration of saturated fats also include a lot of cholesterol. As you can imagine, this can damage us even more.
Saturated fats are present in numerous foods. Most of them should be mentioned in dairy products and meat. Basically speaking most of the animal foods have high saturated fats levels. This includes pork, beef fat, lamb, cream, lard, cheese and butter. Unfortunately dairy products can also contain cholesterol in some cases, although a lot of people are not aware of this. You should also think about the fact that most of the fried and baked foods we eat include a lot of saturated fats.
The problem is that it is quite hard to determine how much saturated fat you are allowed to eat in order to not create problems. It would be quite difficult living if we eliminate all of them. According to specialists, saturated fats intake should be limited to less than seven percent of all the calories you take in on a daily basis. For instance, if your diet provides 3000 calories in one day, a maximum of 210 calories of saturated fats are allowed. This basically means that you could eat 24 grams tops.
The good news comes from the fact that we can replace saturated fats with polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats. There are many foods that will contain them and by replacing the ones we eat with these we can bring in a series of benefits to our body. Unfortunately this translates in having to replace with nuts, fish and liquid vegetable oil when cooking. It is quite difficult to do but not at all impossible. Remember that you do not really need to eliminate saturated fats completely. All you really have to do is make sure that you limit how much you eat and aim for alternatives.
