Osteoporosis Medication
Osteoporosis medication can be taken in various forms. Which kind of medication you need depends mostly on your specific condition such as age, health condition, stamina, and bone condition. Here are some of the common medications for osteoporosis.
1. Alendronate, which can be used to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Alendronate is mostly prescribed for men. But it is also effective for women at the post-menopausal ages. Some types of drugs may cause the bones to lose its density when consumed in long term. This drug works well to restore the density, especially for the bones at spine and hips.
2. Raloxifene, which has many estrogen-like properties and can be used for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
3. Risedronate, which can be used for both prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. The drug has effects that lead to slower bone density loss and reduces the risk of bone fractures. It is also effective to recover bone density loss which is caused by long term medication.
4. Calcitonin, which is injected into the body or taken as a nasal spray to treat osteoporosis. The drug works like hormones that are involved in calcium regulation and bone metabolism, and thus result in increased bone density and slower density loss.
5. Parathyroid Hormone, which is good for women at menopause or post-menopause ages, as well as for men. The hormone will help in the formation of new bones and result in increased bone density, so that there are lesser risks of bone fractures.
6. Hormone Therapy, or also known as Estrogen Therapy, which can treat the symptoms of menopause and prevent bone density loss. However, the method of hormone therapy has raised many concerns due to the side effects.
Different patients may need different osteoporosis medications. Consult your doctor and they will tell you what is appropriate to prevent or treat osteoporosis. It is wise to avail treatment for healthier and stronger bones, even before you break one. If you think of osteoporosis as a common natural disease, you are absolutely wrong. The risk increases naturally, but you can prevent it from an early age onwards by eating healthy food, avoiding drinking and smoking habits, and exercising regularly. And if you think of osteoporosis as a not-so harmful disease, you are definitely wrong. Consider being unable to move as you break a vital bone and you will realize the adverse effects this disease can have in your life. The effect can spread and lead to other health problems. So change your habits soon before you need medication for osteoporosis. It is always a wiser decision
