Gestational Diabetes
Whenever a women is pregnant she has to ensure that she takes care of what she eats and what substances enter her body whether voluntarily or involuntarily because something that may not be that harmful to the health of the female maybe extremely toxic to the foetus in the womb. Given that the unborn baby is totally unable to fend for itself and is unable to even feed itself, it must rely on the mother in order to provide it with sufficient nutrients transported via the umbilical cord.
Gestational diabetes is a rather curious form of diabetes because it only ever manifests itself during the course of the pregnancy of the mother and it is also extremely predictable (it will only manifest itself after 28 weeks of pregnancy) and even more bizarrely it tends to manifest itself more commonly in women who have never been diagnosed as being diabetic prior to the development of the gestational diabetes.
Gestational diabetes does share one thing in common with the other forms of diabetes: the symptoms of it are rather non-conspicuous and so the gestational diabetes is generally only discovered whenever the mother goes for a pregnancy screening. It is not an especially common form of diabetes and it is even rarer than type 1 diabetes (also known as juvenile diabetes).
Just like all the other forms of diabetes, gestational diabetes is totally treatable and with the right diet as well as medication the mother will be able to reduce the risks by quite a significant amount. Medication is generally only used as a means of last resort because of the worry that the medication may subsequently interfere with the child but, every case is and must be judged on its merits.
Gestational diabetes is far from fatal but it can make the delivery of the child far more difficult than it needs to be and so it is not uncommon for mothers who suffered from gestational diabetes during the course of the pregnancy to then have to have a Caesarean in order to have the baby extracted from the womb.
A child that is born to a mother who suffered from gestational diabetes is also at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes themselves in their adult lives and will also suffer a higher propensity towards the development of childhood obesity as well.
