Diabetes Onset
Prediabetes occurs when the body isn’t able to maintain normal blood glucose level. Glucose is higher than the upper limit allowed, but not high enough to define diabetes.
Foods ingested are transported into the bloodstream as sugar (glucose) and is absorbed by all cells and the body uses it for energy. Normally, the pancreas produces a sufficient amount of insulin, which stimulates the entry of glucose into cells. If the body's cells do not respond to insulin action, the condition called peripheral resistance to insulin action, glucose accumulates in the blood (hyperglycaemia).
Accumulation of blood glucose causes the torrent of prediabetes state. In the absence of treatment, impaired glucose tolerance becomes the onset of type 2 diabetes or leads to serious problems of the heart and major blood vessels.
Prediabetes is often clinically asymptomatic. However, certain risk factors such as obesity and physical inactivity can lead to the installation of prediabetes.
Prediabetes diagnosis is very important. Although prediabetes has no clinical symptoms, glucose level increases by 10 percent and the risk of cardiovascular complications arises in comparison with the population which presents normal values of blood glucose.
Also, the risk of developing neurological, eye and kidney complications is higher in people with prediabetes. Low-carbohydrate diet, exercise and weight loss are important measures of prevention and might delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
If diagnosed with impaired glucose tolerance, the treatment is to reverse the state of prediabetes or delay its progression to type 2 diabetes. Weight loss, proper diet and carrying a schedule of physical exercises are all very effective ways to delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and decrease the risk of developing complications such as coronary artery disease or sudden strokes. These measures may seem simplistic, but are enough to keep blood sugar within normal limits.
In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medicines to supplement the diet and exercise program. However, recent studies have shown promising results in prevention of type 2 diabetes, by simple means of diet and exercise. A study made by the Diabetes Prevention Program showed that lifestyle modification is far more effective than drug therapy. The results of this study are:
- People who lost about 5-10% of their weight with exercise: the risk of type 2 diabetes decreases by 58%
- People who took the drug treatment and kept receiving it: the risk of type 2 diabetes risk decreases by only 31%.
