Diabetes - Living With It
Diabetes is a worrying and problematic health condition which is so problematic by virtue of the fact that it causes a whole host of other health complaints and complications as well and so the sufferer has to contend not only with the diabetes, but all of the other risks as well. It is an extremely stressful disease and it is little wonder that people who suffer from it are bound to suffer from bouts of anxiety attacks and depression.
One of the most frustrating aspects of the disease is that whilst there are a wide number of sufferers (and with those figures due to double in the next twenty years) there is a woefully insufficient amount of information or raw data regarding the precise causes of it. To date, there is only supposition and theories and whilst these are fairly compelling they do not provide prima facie evidence as to the root causes which makes the prevention of the illness all the more problematic.
Diabetes affects the vascular system on a number of levels and as a result there are a number of health risks that diabetics will have to contend with. As a result of the poor circulation to the feet (which is extremely problematic in of itself) which is exacerbated by virtue of the delayed healing of wounds typical to diabetic people, this means that diabetics are at a greatly enhanced risk of developing problems such as gangrene. This means that special care has to be adopted to ensure that such infections do not escalate into something far more severe. Another foot complaint that diabetics suffer from is tingling and loss of sensation, although it should be noted that whilst this is typically suffered in the feet, it can also manifest itself in the hands as well.
As if this was not enough to contend with, diabetic people must also come to terms with the possibility that they may also suffer blindness whether this happens to be partial or total is a matter of fate. Again, just with the complications of the feet, diabetics are at an increased risk of becoming blind as a result of compromised and pathological blood vessels which interrupt blood flow to the retina.
If you do happen to suffer from diabetes, it is vital that you follow any and all instructions from your physician as closely as possible so as to minimize the risks.
