Diabetes in Children

Diabetes is a condition in which the body produces less insulin and thereby causing the level of sugar to be increased in the blood. People of any age can get affected by diabetes. Diabetes in children is quite common these days. Children may get exposed to certain viruses or environmental conditions that can eventually cause diabetic condition. This type of diabetes is called type 1 diabetes. The most vulnerable period for children to get type1 diabetes is around age of 8 to 14. Sometimes adults around age of 40 and above can also get affected by type 1 diabetes.

Type I diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body attacks its own organs and tissues. Type I diabetes is caused due to the destruction of the insulin producing cells present in the pancreas. Diabetes in children is frequently caused by the combination of genetic and environmental triggers. Children who don’t have any family history of diabetes are found to be affected with Type I diabetes.

Type II diabetes in children may sometime happen due to overweight, unhealthy diet and lack of exercise. The effects of Type I diabetes usually show up in few days, while that of Type II diabetes may be shown after some years after causing some serious problems in body.
Juvenile diabetes have common indications such as headache, weight loss, thirst, tiredness, behavioral problems, frequent urination, stomach ache, bedwetting, deep breathing, vomiting etc. History of frequent illness without any reasons and repeated pains in the tummy are needed to be considered as indications of diabetes.

Diabetes in children should be monitored very carefully. Frequently testing blood sugar levels helps know how much insulin will be required to keep sugar levels as near to normal as possible. The usual times to test are: before meals, before bedtime and maybe one to two hours after meals or a big snack. For diabetes, when you eat is as important as what you eat. Eating meals that are approximately the same size and combination of carbohydrates and fats at the same time everyday helps to keep blood sugar regular and predictable. The best diet is one that is low in fat, low in salt and low in added sugars.

Today with all the advances of medicine that are available, a child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes can live a very normal, long life.
