Diabetes and Hypertension
The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) stated that diabetes is a disease that can be encountered as much in prosperous nations, as it can be encountered in poor and disadvantaged communities. It’s not uncommon for people with diabetes to also suffer from hypertension. According to an American Heart Association (AHA) statement, hypertension affects both people with diabetes as well as people without diabetes.
Although the two conditions seem to have common points, the processes leading to this phenomenon are unknown. Some experts claim that problems with the body’s structure and insulin levels might be the cause. Like hypertension, diabetes increases the risk of having heart disease and palpitations. While suffering from both diabetes and hypertension, these risks are highly increased.
In time, most people with diabetes are exposed to cardiovascular problems. Although this is more common for type 1 diabetes, it frequently occurs in cases of type 2 diabetes as well, mostly after the age of 40. Arteriosclerosis and high blood pressure (which increases systolic pressure) is twice as frequent among people who suffer from diabetes, than it is among people who don’t. The risk is continuous: every 20 mmHg increase of the systolic pressure and 10 mmHg increase of the diastolic blood pressure doubles the chances of heart disease. People with diabetes who don’t receive treatment and do not have an appropriate diet are also exposed to an increased level of lipids in their blood.
The American Heart Association states that 75% of the people with heart disease suffer from diabetes, as a result of hypertension. This is why keeping blood pressure under observation could be a vital factor in the prevention of heart disease and palpitations for people with diabetes.
To complicate matters, diabetes itself causes high blood pressure. People who suffer from both types of diabetes and coronary artery disease usually have to deal with an excess of insulin. This increases blood pressure in two different ways: the kidneys retain sodium and the sympathetic nervous system affects blood circulation by overcharging blood vessels.
Not only people with diabetes or people with hypertension are exposed to the risks of heart disease, but these people are also more exposed to kidney disease and ophthalmic problems. Maintaining blood pressure and blood sugar at a normal level can help anyone live a normal and risk-free life, because it prevents having to deal with so many health problems.
