Diabetes in Adults
Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a long-term metabolic disorder that is primarily characterized by insulin resistance, relative insulin deficiency, and hyperglycemia (high blood sugar or high glucose in the blood). Insulin resistance means that fat, liver and muscle cells do not respond normally to insulin. As a result they do not store sugar for energy. Since the tissues do not respond well to insulin, the pancreas produces more and more insulin.
Diabetes in adults is often associated with obesity. It is sometimes referred to as maturity onset diabetes because it usually develops in people over 40 years of age. However, it is also possible for children as young as seven to develop type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes in adults is a chronic (lifelong) disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. It begins when the body does not respond correctly to insulin, a hormone released by the pancreas. Insulin helps the cells in the liver, muscle, and fat tissue to convert glucose of blood into glycogen and store this glycogen in the liver and muscle.
Because sugar is not getting into the tissues, an abnormally high level of sugar builds up in the blood. This is called hyperglycemia. Many people with insulin resistance have hyperglycemia and high blood insulin levels at the same time. People who are overweight have a higher risk of insulin resistance, because fat interferes with the body's ability to use insulin.
Maturity onset diabetes is usually related to low activity level, poor diet, and excess body weight (especially around the waist). Family history and genetics also play a large role in type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes in adults may have some other risk factors like:
• High blood pressure.
• History of gestational diabetes.
• Age greater than 45 years.
• Previously identified impaired glucose tolerance by your doctor.
• Race/ethnicity.
• HDL cholesterol of less than 35 mg/dL or triglyceride level of greater than 250 mg/dL
People with type 2 diabetes make up as much as 95% of all people with diabetes.
Someone with type 2 diabetes may be able to control their symptoms just by eating a healthy diet and monitoring their blood glucose levels. However, type 2 diabetes is progressive, so it is possible that they will eventually need to take insulin medication, such as injections.
If diabetes is not treated it can lead to many different health problems. This is because large amounts of glucose can damage organs, blood vessels and nerves in body.
