A Few Easy Steps to Prevent Diabetes
The good news is that type 2 diabetes can be prevented. 9 of 10 cases could be prevented through some simple steps: keeping weight under control, exercise, healthy diet and quitting smoking. Studies suggest that 90% of cases of diabetes in women may be favoured by such factors as: overweight, inactivity, unhealthy diet and smoking.
Making a few changes in the rules of life can dramatically decrease the chance of diabetes. The same changes also go to the prevention of cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Weight gain is the most important cause of occurrence of type 2 diabetes, the risk is 20-40 times higher in obese, compared to the normal weight people. A weight loss of 7-10% from initial weight significantly reduces the risk of diabetes.
Inactivity is a factor that favours the emergence of diabetes. Studies show that half an hour walk a day reduced risk of type 2 diabetes by 30%. These exercises have beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system.
Two changes in diet can have an impact on risk for disease.
1. Carbohydrates: choose foods made from whole grains rather than high carbohydrate and processed. White bread, white rice, mashed potatoes, donuts and more sweetened breakfast cereals have a high heat index. This means that they lead to elevated blood sugar. Carbohydrates that are not so easily digestible causes slower blood sugar. The result is stress reduction cells of the pancreas to produce insulin and thus preventing type II diabetes.
These foods have a low heat index. Examples: whole wheat, brown rice, other whole grains, seeds, nuts and whole grains for breakfast.
2. Fats: choose "good" fats in place of fats which are considered bad. The types of fats in foods may affect the development of diabetes. Good fats, such as polyunsaturated found in tuna, salmon, liquid vegetable oils, nuts, can prevent development of diabetes.
If you smoke, try to give up the addiction. Type 2 diabetes is in the long list of diseases caused by smoking. Smokers have a greater risk and are 50% to 90% more likely to develop diabetes than non-smokers.
Alcohol may have beneficial effects. Numerous studies have shown that moderate alcohol consumption decreases the risk of heart disease. This is true for type 2 diabetes. Moderate alcohol consumption - one drink per day for men and one drink every two days for women - increases the efficiency of insulin to bring glucose into cells. The key is to keep consumption at a moderate level.
