Pomelo

The pomelo is a huge citric fruit that originates from Asian regions. Some even call it the Chinese grapefruit. The first thought that comes to mind when we see a pomelo fruit is that it is undeniably an over-grown grapefruit. Pomelos look from the outside very much alike usual grapefruits, with a yellow thick peel. When opened, the fruit reveals a flesh that is surprisingly not as juicy as the flesh of other citric. Pomelos taste actually sweet compared to their close sisters, the grapefruits.

If we are talking about size, then the pomelo is king amongst citric. Its normal dimensions vary from the ones of an overweight grapefruit to the ones of a large play ball. A pomelo fruit usually weight 1.5 kilograms, but we occasionally can find a pomelo that looks absolutely huge and weights up to 3 or even 4 kilograms. Pomelos are fruits that enclose an edible flesh, but the peels that are found between slices are very thick and bitter, and are usually discarded.

As most citric, pomelos can bring numerous benefits to our body. What makes them particularly special is the bioflavonoid that can be found in their coating. This substance is known to stop cancer. It reacts at cellular level with already developed cancer cells and it destroys their reproductive means. So cancer cells that already exist in organism will not get eliminated by this substance, but if every cell’s reproductive mechanisms are destroyed, then the cancer will register a stop.

The pomelo also helps with cholesterol problems. Pectin is a substance that simply burns out deposits in our blood arteries, and since the pomelo encloses it in large numbers, they are some of the recommended fruits in case of high cholesterol. Also, the vitamin C witch pomelos, as all citric, have, will help the immune system and improve arterial mobility.

The pomelo also encloses large quantities of enzymes. Some help in digestion, others help reducing stress and others help the weight loosing process. A fruit salad that is made of pomelos and other citric fruits will produce a strong anti oxidation reaction in our bodies, and if consumed daily will aid us to maintain and develop a strong toxin and fat free body.

Pomelo fruits are best when fully ripen. Because of their composition, the fully grown fruit will always seem too weighty for its size. Pomelo flesh is usually white, but we can find pomelos that have pink or red flesh. These assortments are usually a bit sweeter than the white pomelo, because they contain more natural sugars.
