Carbohydrates
Low Carbohydrate Diet
Low carbohydrate diets are very popular and they have been advertised for quite a long time now. The problem is that there are only few people that really know how they work and whether or not they are safe for us. Although the opinions are mixed among nutritionists, here is what you should always take into account when thinking about a low carbohydrate diet.
Carbohydrates and Diet
Carbohydrates are very important in our diet because they give us energy. Our body uses glucose and around half of the energy that is used is needed by body tissues and muscle. We do not directly consume glycogen or glucose. We basically eat various foods that contain carbohydrates. The body is responsible for transforming carbs into glucose. A lot of people currently think that carbohydrates make us fat and this is not correct. The truth is that diet that is rich in carbohydrates and fibers and low in fat is great in order to achieve proper weight management.
Good Carbohydrates
When talking about good carbohydrates we must talk about the glycemic index (commonly referred to as GI) and understand that natural is always better than processed. GI is basically a way to classify carbohydrates, all linked to the effect they have on blood glucose levels. All carbohydrates that turn to glucose fast will receive a high value of GI and those that will metabolize slower offer a low value of GI. According to most specialists hypertension, heart disease, insulin resistance and diabetes is usually caused by eating too many carbohydrates that have a high GI value.
Simple Carbohydrates
Simple carbohydrates are basically sugar types that can be located in different foods. In most situations simple carbohydrates are sweeteners that can be classified as disaccharide and monosaccharide. We have noticed that a lot of people are actually confusing these substances with complex carbohydrates. The most common forms of simple carbohydrates that you will get in contact with are lactose, glucose and sucrose.
Complex Carbohydrates
Complex carbohydrates can simply be defined as chains that contain more than two sugar molecules that are linked together. Such long sugar molecule chains are known as starches. They are useful in plants because the store energy. In complex carbohydrates they are branched and such branches are known as cellulose. The plants are given their shape because of cellulose, which forms structural components.
