Blueberry Farms – A Healthy Tradition

Since early ages, the blueberry industry has been highly appreciated and has developed into a nation wide business opportunity very quickly. Blueberry farms, situated all over the world, produce every day thousands of tons of fresh blueberries and they ship them all over Europe and America for direct consumer use.

Most farmers that started a blueberry farm more than a century ago left the legacy to their sons and daughters. Even the ones that did not specialize in growing blueberries still kept the tradition and still care for a small parcel of blueberry rows today. This father to son tradition assures that the growing methods remained unchanged even if new hi-tech means are available.

Traditional blueberry farms care for their harvest from day one. Farmers plant the young blueberries each in a separate region of a row, cutting off loose cannels and watering each and every one of them depending on the soil needs. It is crucial to give blueberry bushes the right quantity of water and farmers know that, so if the watering is not manual, they carefully set the irrigating machines to ensure crop quality.

Blueberries coming from old-school blueberry farms are usually available during late summer, when they are fully grown and freshly harvested. There is no doubt that you bought some natural healthy fruits when you look at them and notice the dark blue round shape, the dimensions that can be compared to those of a small coin and the consistency of the dark colored natural blueberry juice.

Natural blueberries should taste a little sour because they are high in vitamin C. Nowadays there are producers that attempt to alter the properties of the plants, trying to grow them bigger and sweeter, but these berries are not as healthy as those coming from traditional blueberry farms. Tradition asks for certain planting and caring methods that are usually kept as a secret by every farmer, but the general guidelines are presented in any gardening book, because the blueberry bush is a plant that everyone wants to have in their backyard.

It is true that you can grow them yourself, but the maturing process takes a few years and most people do not show that patience when it comes to harvesting their results. That’s why the organic traditional farms keep on living to this date, and the consumer market is growing every day as people become more and more aware of the benefits that healthy fruits bring them.
