Sources Of Bioflavonoids
There are numerous sources of bioflavonoids. Fresh fruits and vegetables, including green leafy veggies, root crops and citrus are all very good sources of bioflavonoids but that is not the end of the list. There are many other excellent sources for these nutrients. Some will surprise you.
Bioflavonoids are not one single compound like vitamin C for example. There are many chemicals or phytonutrients that are classified as bioflavonoids. So many, that items we use or could use everyday are overlooked. Here are some lesser known sources for these important nutrients.
Onions and their counter part garlic. Both of these "roots" contain large amounts of bioflavonoids. Although they grow in the ground they are not true root crops like carrots, potatoes, or radish. They are actually part of the lily family and are bulbs as opposed to roots or tubers. Adding onions and garlic to your cooking is easy and tasty. Now you also know it is healthy as well.
Tea is another item that we usually overlook. All tea contains high levels of bioflavonoids. Green tea is what had received a lot of press lately and for good reason. It contains a tremendous amount of bioflavonoids and other anti-oxidants as well. Drinking a cup or two of tea a day can give you benefits you were previously unaware of.
Saw Palmetto is another under utilized source for these phytonutrients. Saw Palmetto is a berry. Mostly people take saw palmetto in capsule form as a dietary supplement. There are numerous reasons to add saw palmetto to your diet. Prostrate health is the most common.
Mangos, they are sweet and good to eat. They are also bursting with bioflavonoids. Eat them raw, add them to salads, chutneys, and other accompaniments to main dishes and you too can reap the benefits of this fruit. In addition to the bioflavonoid content, mangos are rich in vitamin C and vitamin E and beta carotene. This is a fruit that you should eat plenty of when it is in season.
When we add different sources of bioflavonoids to our diet, we are doing ourselves a great service. Every source has its own unique compounds of bioflavonoids. By changing these sources around and keeping variety in our diets we are eating healthier and we will remain healthier. It is also easier to keep eating healthy when there is an abundant choice of foods to choose from. Looking into different sources of bioflavonoids is a great way to keep healthy.
