Thimbleberry
The thimbleberry is scientifically known as Rubus Parviflorus. It is basically a Rubus species and its natural habitat is located from Michigan and Ontario to Alaska on the Northern and Western side of North America. You will also find thimbleberry bushes in Mexico. What is interesting is the fact that you will find the plant at various altitude levels from sea level to 2500 m. A legend currently states that Thimble Islands (Connecticut) have their name from this plant, even if you will not really find a lot of thimbleberry bushes in the area.
The thimbleberry shrub is very dense and can present canes with a diameter of 3 to 15 mm and can be as high as 2.5 m. The plant features an underground rhizome and it is very common to notice large clumps spreading over it. One interesting factor about the shrub comes from the lack of thorns, which can not be said in connection with most berries out there. Thimbleberries present palmate, fuzzy and soft leaves. Its flowers have a diameter of 2 to 6 centimeters. The thimbleberry fruit is edible and will ripe at the end of Summer. You should be aware of the fact that the fruit should be gathered when its color turns bright red. The fruit is very similar to a raspberry in the sense that is does not really look like a true and regular berry. The name of the plant comes from the fact that its fruit has a hollow interior and on the whole it looks a lot like a thimble. You will find thimbleberries near forest clearings, railroad tracks and roadsides.
The main difference between a raspberry and a thimbleberry comes from the fact that the thimbleberry presents a flatter, softer and larger fruit with a lot of seeds. Unfortunately you will have problems in finding thimbleberries in the supermarket because the fruit does not ship well due to its softness. On the other hand you might find thimbleberry jams, especially in the Upper Michigan area of Keweenaw Peninsula. Making a thimbleberry jam is very easy as you will only need sugar and boiling is the only longer action that is required. Whenever in the native area of the fruit you should consider buying a jar of thimbleberry jam or looking for ripe fruits to be picked in their habitat
