Strawberry
Strawberries are such juicy, delicious and versatile fruits that we just love eating them. You should also know that they are perfect as a healthy snack, whether it is by themselves or in conjunction with other fruits to form a tasty and nutritious fruit salad. You can buy them from the store but most people will tell you that there is nothing that can ever match the taste of your own home-grown strawberries. The problem with the strawberries available in the stores and grocers is that they have had to travel to get to their current destination, which in turn means that they are not fresh at all. The irony in this however is that given the remarkably versatile and durable nature of the strawberry it also means that they can be successfully grown and cultivated in nearly any climate!
That said, it is crucial that you appreciate one very critical fact about strawberry plants: as tough as they are when it comes to the condition of soil, these plants have an Achilles heel in that they are especially prone to viruses and diseases. Because of this, it is vital that when you actually purchase strawberry seeds you acquire them from a certified dealer who will be able to clearly prove that the seeds that you are intending to use are free from any diseases. Diseases can become hereditary, which means that if the parent plants have a defective gene, then this will pass onto the offspring. To put it simple, the entire stock is weakened.
Growing your own strawberry plants can be a fun and immensely rewarding experience so long as you are willing to put in the hard work, so don’t worry if you are not a gardening expert! With some basic precautions and diligence you will have your very own crop of plants in no time.
One of the most frustrating aspects of growing strawberry plants is how susceptible they are to damage. Whilst we happen to find strawberries tasty the same can be said about birds that are attracted by the bright colours of the plants and the seeds that are contained within them. You may want to cover your plants with some form of protective layering in order to avoid the worst effects of the birds.
Strawberries are also very vulnerable to the ravages of frost and cold weather so please make sure that you plan accordingly in order to prevent the worst effects of the winter.
