Poisonous Wild Berries
We live in a society where our food is prepared and packaged froe us and this means that we are somewhat distanced both physically and emotionally from the process involved in actually gathering that particular food. For example, whenever we purchase meat from the supermarket, whilst we may have a rather vague idea of the concept involved in the production of that meat (the raising and slaughtering of the animals) we will not have experienced from a firsthand perspective that particular process.
Because of this lack of personal experience and involvement we are for the most part rather ignorant to our food while not thinking where it comes from and the problems associated with the gathering of it. Novices say to themselves that they would like to gather some berries in order to make a cake, a dessert, some alcohol or whatever. Often, they will simply charge on ahead without any thought or consideration to the risks or the actual logistics involved with the entire process. This can often result in major problems further down the line.
The problem with picking wild berries is that poisonous wild berries often closely resemble their non-toxic counterparts and this can prove to be especially problematic. The ill effects of poisonous wild berries can range from the mild (such as an upset stomach, or muscle cramps) to the likes of nightshade, which can actually be fatal!
Make sure that you are intimately aware of the actual colour and shape of each of the different types of wild berries that you intend to harvest and put bluntly, given the potential risks involved (as well as the severity of the damage possible) if you have any doubt at all whatsoever about whether or not a berry is poisonous then simply stay away from it.
Please be extra vigilant whenever you go berry picking if you have children with you, because children are naturally inquisitive and curious. This means that if they see a brightly coloured berry or are lured by a sweet smell then your words of caution may end up being tossed aside. Make sure that if they do pick any berries they are wearing gloves and that they bring them to an adult for closer examination. Make sure you keep a close eye on them so that they do not wander off.
