Poison Berries
Many plants that look beautiful are dangerous. Although they produce berries, not all of them are edible. We are dealing with many poison berries and unfortunately a lot of them cause death every single year. Let us see the ones that we really have to pay attention to.
First on the list is the Boston Ivy, which produces spherical, dark, 8 mm blue berries. They look very much like grapes and appear in remote clusters. Then we have the English Ivy, which produces dark small purple berries. They look a lot lie Black Currents when analyzing color, dimension and shape. A lot of children have been tricked due to this fact. The problem is that they appear from the end of winter to early spring, exactly the period where the child is very curios and mostly attracted to colors.
In late summer you need to be on the lookout for Lantana. It produces shiny poison berries that will appear in open clusters located above the foliage of short stems. The only good news that can be linked with them is that most of the poison is there when Lantana berries are green. We must also mention the Virginia Creeper, which produces poison berries that are black towards blue in color. Privet is probably the one poison berry that everybody knows. It is very common in a lot of gardens and it produces berries of 4 to 8 mm of a black color.
Special attention among poison berries needs to appear when dealing with Yew Berries. These are the berries that have caused most poisonings in the past. The size is 8 to 10 mm (diameter) and they look bright scarlet, with a depression similar to a cup at its base. Yew Berries appear in September and children are very attractive to the bright colors of the berries. This brings is to the Deadly Nightshade (commonly known as Belladonna). Just as the name implies, this plant that will produce berries in September is quite a problem. The berry’s sweet taste can make it very attractive for children.
The poison berries mentioned above are just some of the many that need to be known. We should also mention various other poison berries like Elderberry, The Castor Oil Plant, Potatoes (they do produce berries), Mistletoe, Holly and Rowan Berries. In most situations children are affected because they do not really know that the berries they see are not to be eaten. They look nice or similar to what they have eaten in the past so they can easily be tempted.
