Planting Raspberries
The raspberry is a bush that produces delicious and extremely benefic fruits. This bush is very appropriate for countries with a temperate climate. There are three varieties of raspberries: the red raspberries, the yellow raspberries and the black raspberries.
Where to plant raspberries?
The most important requirement of this plant regards the type of soil it needs in order to grow nicely and produce delicious fruits. It needs a humid soil, but it will also go for soils that are a little bit sandier, as long as you are prepared to water them weekly in summer’s most torid months. For best results, the soil must be chemically neutral, witch means it’s PH factor must be considered neutral.
The raspberry bush fruits will appear pretty late so a special care against frost won’t be necessary. The raspberry usually grows widely in regions with forests, so shade won’t be a problem for this plant.
When to plant the raspberry bush?
October is the perfect month for planting raspberries, but they can also be planted in March, if the weather and the soil permit it. When planting raspberries, you will need to dig a groove of about 30 centimeters deep and 1 meter wide. If you plan on planting more that just one row, leave about 2 meters between the rows to allow the roots to freely develop beneath the ground and to make picking the fruits in the summer easier.
When you are planting raspberries you will need plant supports. Install a typical plant support brought from specialized stores after you finished the groove, but before placing the plant. You will not fix the plant too tight onto this support. You must be planting the raspberries at about 50 centimeters apart in the groove and then cover the roots with dirt. This will contribute to the forming of more vigorous roots. Finally, cut off the plant until you reach a height of about 15 centimeters above the ground. This might seem a bit drastic, but if the cutting is not correctly done then the plant will be seriously weakened.
After correctly planting your raspberries, care for them properly and do not allow them to get extremely dry. If the summer is especially dry, give your plants a water shower once in a while or at least be careful to water the soil frequently or they might not produce as many fruits as they can that year.
