Loganberry
Loganberries were created by an American horticulturist by the name of James H. Logan in 1881. We are basically talking about a hybrid that is basically a cross between raspberries and blackberries. Thanks to Logan’s work the result was a plant that did resist to frost and disease a lot better than most berries. The problem is that the popularity of the loganberry is small due to the fact that it is difficult to grow. Loganberry plants are thorny and the fruits are hidden by leaves in most cases. It is also very difficult to completely end up harvesting a plant because the fruits will show different maturity on the same plant. This has brought in a popularity that is usually restricted to domestic gardens.
When compared to the blackberry we can see that the loganberry will grow fruits earlier. The fact that different maturity stages are shown in the fruits on the same plant, it will take around 2 months to completely harvest one loganberry. In most regions around the world we are talking about July to September. One loganberry bush is usually capable of producing around 7.5 kg of fruits. When it is time to harvest them they are deep purple and not red as when they appear.
Just like most berries, loganberries can be consumed fresh and there is no need to prepare them in most cases. On the other hand, this fruit is very popular in country wines, fruit syrups, jams, crumbles and pies. The good news for cooks all around the world is the fact that a loganberry can be used instead of a blackberry or a raspberry in most possible recipes.
Most of us have seen loganberries in Loganberry Juice, especially in the west side of New York, in Canada and Southern Ontario. What is interesting is the fact that loganberry juice became popular really fast in Southern Ontario. Nowadays Pepsi-Cola is actually distributing the most known brand of loganberry juice: “Aunt Rosie’s”. We can see this juice in a lot of local restaurants. Alternatively, when you go to a supermarket you might find that loganberry syrups are available for sale.
The popularity of the loganberry is in no way similar to that of other berries. On the other hand, we can say that this popularity is constantly rising. The problem is that few growers are expected to start growing loganberry plants due to the hard harvesting factor mentioned above.
