Huckleberry

If you have a strong sense of cynicism when it comes to the so called “super foods” and the almost miraculous properties that they seem to have, which range from turning back the aging process to preventing cancer, from curing heart disease to making our breath sweeter then you know that there are a lot of false claims around us every day. To make things even more bewildering (as if they weren’t already!) we have to contend with the myriad of quasi-scientific explanations as to how the various benefits are actually achieved, although in most cases rather than allaying our concerns, it simply worsens them.

Trying to sort out fact from fiction is nothing short of impossible because the truth, whilst an increasingly scarce commodity when it comes to these so called super foods, is wrapped up and distorted within layer upon layer of half-truth and pseudo-plausible explanation. The last thing we want is to squander our money on quack remedies that will not do what they say they will. Caution is especially important because, regrettably, with some of these food types there is a risk of harmful side effects for some people.

When the humble huckleberry was first promoted as being the latest and greatest super-fruit that could cure all our ills and protect our good health, we all waited with bated breath for the tidal wave of hyperbole that would no doubt accompany it. What has proven to be the most remarkable thing about the positive media attention surrounding the huckleberry is that it is all genuine!

Huckleberry has been advocated to treat a wide range of different health complaints ranging from the merely irritating (like constipation) to the chronic ones (like diabetes). In a profession where emotions are kept firmly in line, the medical world has been bowled over by the remarkable potency of this humble fruit in relation to the treatment and management of certain health conditions.

Huckleberry has proven itself especially proficient at helping the circulation of blood around the body, which is a primary concern when it comes to diabetes. However, this increased circulation is also extremely helpful to treat other conditions such as muscle cramps and certain types of arthritis, both of which are caused by limited blood circulation.

Huckleberries are often overshadowed by their close family member, the blueberry, due to the remarkable similarity they share in terms of colour, taste and even shape!
