Goji Berries

Goji Berries are also known as wolfberry, Fructus Lycii, gou qi zi and Lycium barbarum. They are found in Tibet (the Himalayas region), Mongolia and China and are a member of the nightshade family. In most cases you will find them dried and are similar to red raisins. Chinese, Indian and Tibetan herbalists have used goji berries for around 6000 years for a number of associated benefits. This includes improving fertility and sexual function, helping eyesight, protecting our liver, strengthening legs, boosting the immune system, promoting longevity and improving circulation.

The main reason that makes goji berries useful for our body stands in the fact that these fruits are very rich in some antioxidants. The two that are the most important are beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin is very useful as it aids in protection our retina by acting as a powerful antioxidant and absorbing blue light. In the past few years we have noticed that goji juice became very popular. It is used as health beverage and manufactured by a lot of companies.

Goji berries have a taste that can be described as sour and sweet at the same time. Their texture and shape is similar to raisins. Chinese medicine claims that you have to eat goji berries under their raw form, add them to soups, create liquid extracts or make tea out of them. In supermarkets you might even find goji juice. We even have a lot of snack foods that include goji berries, especially in North America.

You will have to pay special attention in consuming goji berries if you are taking anticoagulant drugs. This is because there might be unwanted interactions between the two. On the other hand, in most situations nothing happens. A good rule of thumb would be to contact your doctor if you are drinking goji berries tea or juice and taking such medication at the same time. You might also want to know that goji berries are usually available at special Chinese herbs shops. Only in rare situations you will also find goji juice in health stores, network marketer stores or online stores. Keep in mind that the benefits associated with goji berries have not been proved. A lot of marketing campaigns will claim miraculous health benefits. Remember that they will not work for everybody and you can not really expect to get all of the benefits that are portrayed. Goji berries are great but not as great as some companies might want you to believe.
