Edible Wild Berries
Edible wild berries can provide you with a lot of nutrients that are quite valuable if you are backpacking and going on various trips. Wild berries taste very good and they do offer us very important enzymes and vitamins. Most backpacking food you will think about does not include a lot of the nutrients you will get from wild berries. Also, to make it even more attractive, your backpack will be lighter if you know that your destination features such fruits.
Every single person that goes into the wild parts of places should know how to properly gather food, especially wild food. There are many problems that can appear and it is always better to be prepared. Back country travelers from all around the world are starting to realize the benefits that are coming from edible wild berries.
We are talking about fruits that taste and look exactly as the ones you are buying from the local grocery store. Safe food does exist in wilderness and you do not really need a big identification guide and a lot of training to find it. Do you know how a blueberry, blackberry, strawberry or raspberry looks like? If so, this is all you will need in order to identify every single wild berry out there. The only real difference stands in the fact that most of them will be smaller in the wild when compared to those that you are buying at the grocery store. On the other hand they will contain all the nutrients that you can expect.
For those of you that do not know what to do, there are always identification guides available. Simply take one and go for walks. If you learn how to tell edible wild berries apart from those that can not be eaten you will have a big advantage in the wild. The good news is that you will also enjoy doing this. There is a unique feeling that you get when you realize that you could survive in the wild without any canned food. Wild berries can offer you enough nutrients to survive an entire day. Do not think that you will be safe with just wild berries. You will need other food as well but you can get a very good meal coming from the nutrients in edible wild berries. In most cases we are talking about being able to eat around 500 calories in a maximum of 1 hour. This is quite impressive since we are basically talking about fruits.
One of the best ways to see whether or not a fruit is an edible berry is to taste it. For instance, if you see something that looks like a regular raspberry, taste it. If that is the taste you want then there is a very huge chance it is edible and if not you will want to immediately spit it out. Simply put, there are not a lot of wild berries that can poison you if you just taste. The only exception to this rule is poison ivy berries, which look a lot like white berries. Only try them if you are 100% sure that you are faced with wild berries.
Keep in mind that food is not always a high priority in survival situations. If situation is critical you will want to stay hydrated, uninjured and warm at all times. If you are able to provide food for yourself then all is perfect. This is what food survival guides are for. Wild berries are capable of giving you a lot more than you would expect. You just have to make sure that you are eating edible wild berries.
