Cloudberry
The cloudberry (also spelled cloud berry, sometimes called bakeapple and scientifically known as Rubus chamaemorus) is found in Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is basically a sub species of Rubus that creates fruit that is edible. Both the fruit and the plant have the same name. Keep in mind that the cloudberry looks a lot like salmonberry and the two should not be mistaken.
Nowadays we have noticed that cloudberries are gathered by locals and usually put into jelly jars. This is done in order to eventually be sold as souvenirs to people that visit the above mentioned locations. When you purchase such a jar of jelly you will immediately notice the clear yellow color and we can consider the jelly to be quite beautiful. Also, the taste is interesting because it is very similar to apples.
According to some research studies cloudberry plants can be used for some medicinal purposes. In 1985 a published report showed that a part of the root was brewed and used by barren women so that hard labor would be eased. Different other uses of the plant include fighting fever, cough and some other symptoms and unwanted situations.
Cloudberry fruits are yellow with a golden tilt, juicy and soft. They have a lot of vitamin C in them and if you eat them under their fresh form you will see that they have a tart taste that can not be confused. If the fruit is too ripe then its taste is similar to yogurt. We already mentioned the jelly that can be made out of cloudberries but you might also want to know that they are also made into juices, tarts, jams and even liqueurs. Finland stands out when talking about this fruit because it is usually eaten with a special cheese known as Leipajuusto, sugar and cream. Cloudberry tea is well known in Scandinavian regions because tea made from its leaves was used in the past as special herbal medicine that was drunk in order to treat some urinary tract infections.
There are some locations around the world where you will find cloudberries for sale. The problem is that you will rarely find the fruit and in most situations you will find juice, jelly or jams. If you are looking to taste cloudberries you might find that the only way to do this is to visit the countries where the fruit grows.
