Blueberry

A blueberry can be defined as a flowering plant that is a member of the Vaccinium genus. Natively speaking blueberries have appeared in North America. They grow in various sized shrubs (10 to 400 cm tall). Small blueberry species are commonly known as “lowbush blueberries” (sometimes also called wild blueberries) and the tall blueberry species are known as “highbush blueberries”. What is interesting is the fact that the blueberry fruit is actually a false berry. Its taste is sweet and variable acidity is reality. A typical blueberry brush will show fruits from May till June but the peak of the blueberry ripe fruit season is in July. In Germany and USA July is considered to be “National Blueberry Month”. Starting in 2005 a lot of specialists have started considering the blueberry as a superfruit because it comes to the table with included antioxidants, is rich in nutrients and also offers some health benefits that have been proven in the past.

As already stated, blueberries have appeared in North America but nowadays they are very common in New Zealand, the Southern part of Australia and various South American countries. Shipments of blueberries are also very common and you can basically find them in different forms in most supermarkets around the country.

When talking strictly about wild blueberries things change a little. You will only find then in North America and the ones that are found in Europe, Asia and even some parts of North America are genus sections. The truth is that there are a lot of wild shrubs that will produce berries that are edible and look a lot like blueberries. This includes cranberries, huckleberries, cowberries and bilberries. Even some blueberry jams on the market can contain such wild berry variations instead of the real fruit.

Blueberries taste very good and a lot of people love them. Whenever stocks appear in supermarkets they are quickly sold and this says a lot about the popularity of blueberries. In some restaurants there are pies made with these fruits and they always sell well as specialties. You should also know that blueberries are rich in some nutrients and consuming them is recommended for your body. In this case you should realize that whenever possible, eating blueberries is not at all a bad idea. It does not really matter what species of blueberries you are consuming as all of them have around the same traits and benefits for us.
