Blackthorn Berries – Sloe Berries

There are a lot of berries out there that few people know about and blackthorn berries are among them. They are more commonly known as sloe berries and are basically an ancestor of the well known cultivated plum. Most of the people that know this type of berry do so because of a liqueur that can be obtained from it: sloe gin. In fact, there are some people around the world that have special recipes of sloe gin and do not let anyone know how they do it. On the other hand, blackthorn berries are very favored during Christmas and the result is a drink of a pink colored. In most situations Christmas is great for consuming it because that is when the sloe berries will infuse sugar and gin enough.

Blackthorn berries are usually found in hedgerows and woodland. The plant can grow up to 12 feet. Flowers will appear in March and will last all the way to May. The sloe berries’ fruits should be picked somewhere between the end of September until October. You must remember that making sloe gin is sometimes difficult. This requires patience and you will have to wait a lot from when you pick the fruit till you drink the liqueur. The gin has to get through the fruit’s skin and this is a process that will take a lot of time. On the other hand, most people that drank homemade sloe gin stated that the taste is worth the wait.

Blackthorn berries are usually bitter and a lot of people will have problems in eating raw sloe berries. The good news is that you can benefit if you cook them and make a pie. The pie is quite agreeable and delicious. There are actually many recipes of blackthorn berry pie available on the Internet. If you are interested you will surely find what you are looking for.

The only real problem with blackthorn berries is that they are hard to find. Not all grocery stores will sell them. Sometimes you will need to look hard to find sloe berries for sale. On the other hand, when you do, make sure that you purchase immediately as there are many people that are looking for them. Alternatively you might also find sloe gin for sale. This goes for those of you that do not like the fruit but love the drink. As already mentioned, blackthorn berries are especially popular due to sloe gin.
